Teachers from Kutaisi Applied to Independent Trade Union of Teachers and Scientists for Help

June 30, 2009

According to the Trade Union of Teachers and Scientists so called “information tickets” were distributed in public schools of Kutaisi where teachers should indicate the political party they are member. Teachers say they are not going to fill in the letters. As teachers were explained the information is requested by the Security Department.

Trade Union got in touch with the director of one public school in Kutaisi to find out the situation and the director said representatives of the Educational Resource Center had distributed the letters.

Nika Gvaramia, Minister of Education and Science, told Manana Ghurchumelidze, president of the Trade Union, that he had no information about the letters.

Minister said their ministry intends to create data-base about teachers but not in this form. The Minister said filing in of the information letters will be prevented immediately.

“Alongside many problems our teachers encounter with more and more difficulties. Trade Union will not leave it without attention. We will appeal to the international labor and human rights organizations and request them to study the issue. I wonder who needs the information which party member the teachers and their family-members are,” said Manana Ghurchumelidze.
