Residents of Ossetian Village Urge for Help

July 15, 2009

Five Ossetian villages in the Phona Community in Lagodekhi district urge for help. Villagers have unsuccessfully applied to the local authority several times and unresolved problems make their life impossible.

The narrow bridge in the village of Zemo Phona, that linked locals with neighboring villages, is destroyed. The villages in the community are not supplied with drinking water and people have to fetch water from the distance of several kilometers. The water leaking from the mountain is creating a pond on the cemetery. The villagers stated in their conversation with us that only 70-meters-long channel is dug. People have applied to the Lagodekhi district authority several times but in vain. River Kabali also creates problems for the village of Kvemo Khechili. During heavy rains the river floods the area and houses of villagers as well.

Officials of the Lagodekhi municipality board state they have information about the problems of Ossetian villages and try to resolve them.
