President Says Government Performed Miracle to Keep Calm during Opposition Rallies

July 21, 2009

President Mikheil Saakashvili says that the government performed a miracle as it did not use force during the opposition rallies.

As the president stated in the parliament today, the worst thing the government can do is to use   force against people. According to him, any state would have used force if they had been in a similar situation like the one Georgia was in since the demonstrations took off in April.

“When we talk about investigating the crime committed on May 6, when there were serious clashes between police and protesters, it is impossible to investigate the case when opposition supporters called upon the government to disperse or otherwise they threatened to disperse us themselves, “said the president.

According to him, all ambassadors in Georgia considered the assault against the police as a crime. “Maybe it was our weakness not to complete the investigation,” said the president.

He asked the opposition to stop thinking about protest demonstrations and civil war and called upon them to start a dialogue with the government. “If police is guilty of reducing the crime rate and made it three times lower in Georgia, in this case I am the main culprit among them, “said President Mikehil Saakahvili. According to him, rioting members of the opposition should keep away from Georgian Police and from those who dedicate themselves to defending people.
