Peasants Protest Legislative Initiative of the Government

July 27, 2009

Peasants in the Kakheti region protest legislative initiative of Georgian government which considers setting fine for appropriation of irrigation water in the Administrative Code of Georgia.

The government demands to discuss the draft-law in a hurry. According to the draft-law, when irrigation water from the water-supply system is appropriated, or water supplied to the Land-improvement Associations is used selfishly a private person will be fined with 250 GEL and legal entity with 500 GEL.

“The tax for irrigation water is large and because of poverty, we often irrigate gardens without permission in order to have harvest and not to stay hungry. If fines are estimated we will not be able to irrigate our gardens and will die of hunger”, stated peasants.
