July 31, 2009

Family of Biashvili from the village of Vejini in Gurjaani district asks for help. On July 22 their house was burned during strong wind. Family of the Biashvilis, including 4 young children, has been living in the open air for ten days.

The only income of the family is aid within Poverty Reduction State Program.

Liana Biashvili applied to the local government for help several times but in vain.

Gela Mtivlishvili, coordinator of the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Center, explained that the local government was responsible to give a shelter to socially disabled family.

“After the ratification of the European Social Charter, Georgian state has to protect social, legal and economical rights of impoverished families. The Article 16 of the charter estimates: “To make necessary conditions to develop a family as an essential part of the society, the sides are responsible to provide families with economic, legal and social rights that can be flat and other relevant privileges” said Mtivlishvili.

Representative of the human rights organization submitted the letter to the local government today.
