Residents of the Village of Udabno are holding a Demonstration at the Presidential Residence

August 3, 2009

Residents of the village of Udabno, Sagarejo District are holding a protest action at the residence of the President of Georgia in Avlabari, Tbilisi. They are protesting against the decision of the Ministry of Economic Development to sell state owned pastures and grass lands in their village

One of the protesters stated that they found out that the state owned lands in their village would be sold unexpectedly. Residents of Udabno say that the village will be deserted after the lands are sold. Several protesters entered the President’s residence and took a special appeal to the President.

Gia Chalatashvili, a Governor of the Sagarejo District Municipality called the accusations of the residents of the village absurd. According to him, residents of the village had appropriated tens of thousands of hectares of plot. “The Ministry of Economic Development offered them some privileges if they bid for the lands during the plot auction but they refused. They want to usethe lands as they had used them before. They are against selling the lands and but neither do they want to buy them”, - said the Governor of Sagarejo.
