Representatives of the Non-Parliamentary Opposition Released a Special Statement Today

August 6, 2009

Today representatives of the non-parliamentary opposition released a special statement. The text is provided below without any changes.

“During the visit of US vice-president Joseph Biden in Georgia, the Georgian government spokeabout the beginning of’the new wave of democracy. In fact, after the visit, people were persecuted on political grounds and participants of demonstrations were beaten. People’s protest is caused by real problems. The reply of a clever government which is oriented toward development should be focused on solving these problems. Unfortunately, the reaction still is not adequate and it is a typical reaction of an  authoritarian regime – the‘new wave of democracy’ of the government is oriented towd persecution of those people who think differently!

The error committed by the Georgian government is not only an interior problem – it is impossible to speak about stability, security and settling conflicts when the government treats  people like an occupier and aggressor. The ‘New wave of democracy’ will turn into a ‘new wave of terro’ under such a policy. Though, the government cannot understand that it can intimidate some of the people for awhile but it cannot intimidate all of the people. The People’s verdict on the government will be the most harsh  if itdoes not stop the imprisonment and  the beating of innocent people.

We appeal to everybody for whom the ideals of freedom are valuable: together be against the most shameful form of crime in the 21st century – terrorizing people because of an opinion different from the government”, - it is stated in the statement.

The statement is signed by political parties: New Rights, Defend Georgia, Democratic Movement – United Georgia, National Forum, Freedom, Conservative Party, Movement for United Georgia, Industry Will Save Georgia, Republican Party, Georgian Way, People’s Party, also Levan Gachechiladze. And according to the authors of the statement, the statement is open for signatures.
