Water Supply Cut off to 12 000 Families in Batumi

August 17, 2009

Water supply has been cut off to the 12 000 families in the settlement of Chaobi in Batumi for several days now. The technical staff of Batumi Tskali (Batumi Water) – Water Supply Company cut off water to these people due to the arrears which is tantamount to one million GEL. However, the subscribers that have paid the arrears do not get water as well.

The water supply company states: “we tried not to close the water supply tube but the population has not given us another choice.”

The cutting of water supply is twice painful for the people in Batumi now because it is a tourist season.

The company states that the water supply will be renewed when the arrears are covered fully.

The subscribers that do not have the arrears protest against this. They demand that the water supply is renewed to the people who do not have arrears immediately. “Our family does not have an arrear. I have a tourist and therefore, I need the water in the house. I am trying to earn some mere money in this tourist season. Cutting water supply in this circumstance was the worst thing that could have happened.” says Liana Beridze, one of the subscribers.
