Minister of Education of Abkhazia Protests Oppression on Teachers from Gali

September 1, 2009

Minister of Education and Culture of Abkhazian Autonomous Republic Dali Khomeriki protests the oppression of teachers from Gali district by separatists and occupants.

Dali Khomeriki said at the press-conference today that several days before the school-term started in Gali district, separatists and occupants intimidated teachers and parents of the pupils at Georgian school; they wanted to hinder educational process.

Director of the public school in the village of Sidi Guliada Sichinava, several teachers and a representative of the school administration were fired because Georgian language was intensively taught at the school. “We want to thank the population and teachers of Gali district for their effort to maintain Georgian language and citizenship in such situation. Russian is native language in the certificates of Abkhazian schools. Similar strategy of occupants endangers not only Georgian but Abkhazian language too. I want to call upon Abkhazian people to realize the situation immediately and not to be suppressed by occupants. We offer them to introduce the program of peace-building education which will support to bring Georgian and Abkhaz youth together,” said Dali Khomeriki.

The Minister said that 150 applicants took national exams and 80 of them are students now.
