IDPs from Abkhazia Refuse to Change Their Accommodation

October 21, 2009

IDPs from Abkhazia residing in the building of Akhtala resort-house in Gurjaani district protest the instruction of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation to change their accommodations.

According to IDPs, few days ago the officials from the ministry warned them to leave the shelter; otherwise they stay without shelter. IDPs say they do not want to move to Bakurtsikhe, besides that the building is not repaired properly. “Here we work at different places and earn some money. If we have to travel to Gurjaani from Bakurtsikhe we will have to spend our salaries on the transportation,” said the IDPs.

Koba Subeliani minister of refugees and accommodation said the IDPs were not informed properly and it caused misunderstanding. “Part of the IDPs refuses to move to a new place. I think somebody spread wrong information; the IDPs were told they could get money instead moving to a new place. Many families accepted the proposal of the government. The new accommodation will be registered on them. For example, two years ago when IDPs were evicted from the hotel “Intourist” in Telavi, investors paid money to them money, but IDPs could not purchase houses. Besides that, donor organizations recommended the government to satisfy the IDPs with accommodations,” the minister reported to the Kakheti News Centre.
