November 17, 2009

Government of Georgia appealed to the European Court of Human Rights and requested to make Moscow to release Georgian teenagers arrested on November 4 immediately. The deputy Minister of Justice Tina Burjaliani made a statement about this. Official appeal was sent to the Strasburg Court yesterday.

According to Nino Burjaliani, the Ministry of Justice sends information to Strasburg Court about the facts of human rights violation on occupied territories. This case is particularly urgent because it is about juveniles. According to the current information, the health condition of one of the detainees is instable.

The appeal to the Strasburg Court states, that such facts cause danger for the life of the people living near the occupied territories.

According to Burjaliani, government of Georgia focused on the fact that rights of the people living near the occupied territories are breached by Russian boarder –officers, who charge locals for illegal crossing of border.

Similar facts which occurred during the last month are mentioned in the appeal of the government of Georgia.

Besides that, according to the deputy minister, on 12August 2008 Strasburg Court ordered Russia to stop violation of human rights in the territories which are under their control. Georgian side appealed to the Strasburg Court in accordance to this resolution of the Court.

“As for the procedural norms, Strasburg Court will resend corresponding information and demand to the Russian side. The procedures will not last for months, these requirements must be satisfied within nearest days or weeks,” stated Burjaliani
