Parliament of Georgia Connects Inactivity of Thomas Hammarberg With Its Alliance with Russia

November 20, 2009

Parliament of Georgia connects the inactivity of the Human Rights Commissioner of the CoE Thomas Hammarberg with his “alliance” with Russia and consequently rebukes his activities.

On November 20, Akaki Minashvili, chairperson of the parliamentary committee of foreign affairs, stated at the plenary session that reaction of international organizations is urgently necessary to resolve the problem of the kidnapped children from Tirdznisi village. Human rights commissioner of the CoE Thomas Hammarberg does not act properly and it raises many questions.

According to the MP, Hammarberg is particularly inactive when the issue deals with Russia and does not make radical statements.

“Similar action is not profitable for the CoE. We have some questions about impartiality of this person; he avoids making radical statements when the issue is about Russia. Nobody shall be surprised when people will have doubt about his relationship with Russia,” said Minashvili.

Davit Bakradze, chairperson of the parliament, responded to Minashvili’s statement and underscored that although the issue is very sensitive, the kidnapping of Georgian adults is indeed a good test for many international organizations.

He added that Georgian MPs do not oppose the CoE; however, it is obvious that they want to trust the organization and the latter shall do its best to resolve the problem.
