Facts of Family Violence has Increased in Kakheti Region Recently

December 10, 2009
According to the MIA, from January to September 2009 no facts of family violence occurred in Kakheti. According to the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Centre, 9 cases of family violence in 2009 were reported.

According to the Human Rights Centre, one of the cases of violence is still being studied. “The man beat his wife several times, he broke her teeth and nose. Last physical violence on her happened on September 30, after this the victim left her husband’s home. The couple has 6 children. At present time,3 children live with their mother in the parents house and another 3 with their father in very hard conditions. One of them is 1 year old, the second is 3 year old and the third is 13. The mother is not given the right to see her children, she even can not go to their street, because violator threatens her by killing with axe. Regional police department had information about this fact, but did not launch any criminal case until we petitioned. Social Service Agency which are responsible to care of the children is informed about current situation of children but this agency even did not get involved in the case. Generally, facts of family violence has become more problematic recently” stated Kakheti office of the Human Rights Centre.

According to the lawyers of the Human Rights Centre, the special law to stop family violence considers a lot of possibilities, but in Kakheti neither police nor court use legal mechanisms.
