According to Gela Nikolaishvili, 38 Inmates of Detention Settings Are on Hunger Strike

According to the lawyer Gela Nikolaishvili, on December 9, 3 more inmates went on hunger strike in detention settings. According to him, representative of the “Democratic Movement-for the United Georgia” Mamuka Shengelia, Melor Vachnadze and expert Vakhtang Maisaia who was arrested for espionage joined the strikers.

According to Nikolaishvili, 35 inmates in various detention settings started hunger strike on December 8. They request meeting with experts of Council of Europe. Prisoners will continue hunger-strike for 3 days. Among strikers are 19 prisoners who were arrested for Mukhrovani mutiny, the member of “Egalitarian Institute” Levan Gogichaishvili, supporters of Igor Giorgadze- Zaza Davitaia, Temur Zhorzholiani and others.

Ministry of Penitentiary, Probation and Legal Aid of Georgia denies the information about hunger strike. According to the public relation department of the ministry, the information was checked several times and it turned out false.

“None of the prisoners are on hunger strike in any detention settings,” stated representatives of the public relation department of the Ministry.

Attorney Gela Nikolaishvili informed agency “InterPressNews” about hunger strike of 38 prisoners in deferent detention settings. According to him, inmates started hunger strike for 3 days and it is connected with International Day of Human Rights.

International Day of Human Rights is celebrated on December 10.
