USA and EU Does not Recognize Separatist Presidential Elections in Abkhazia

December 15, 2009

US does not recognize the so-called presidential elections of Abkhazia. Representative of the US state department Ian Kelly made an official statement about it and it is published on the official website of the US State Department.

“The United States regrets the decision to hold “elections” in Abkhazia region of Georgia on December 12 and recognizes neither the legality nor the results of it. The United States reiterates its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders” the statement says.

Neither EU recognizes so-called presidential elections in Abkhazia. Statement published on the official website of the EU says that EU was informed about the presidential elections in Abkhazia in the territory of Georgia on December 12.

“The EU does not recognize the constitutional and legal frames of the elections. EU still supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders,” said the statement.

Separatist regime of Sokhumi held so called presidential elections on December 12. Sergei Bagapsh won the elections with 61,1 %.
