IDPs Threat With Suicide

December 28, 2009

IDPs are being evicted from the former building of the Ministry of Energy. 37 IDP families from Abkhazia and Tskhinvali district have lived in the building for one year already.

The IDPs protest eviction and state the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation informed them about eviction one day before and they do not know where the ministry is going to shelter them. According to IDPs some of them have changed shelters 6-7 times during one year.

IDPs claim they have appealed for compensation but nobody has replied to them yet. Several IDPs said they have petitioned to the president but Mikheil Saakashvili has not replied yet either. They think, nobody cares about their votes now and consequently, government does not pay attention to them.

Large families also live in the former building of the ministry of energy and several IDPs have serious diseases. They say they have nowhere to go and request the government to allow them to stay in the building. The IDPs say the Ministry of Economic Development is going to sell the building and it shall be free from people in a day. IDPs threat with radical forms of protest, more precisely with burning themselves.
