Akhmeta District Governor Prohibited Employees to Give Interview to Journalists

January 12, 2010
Koba Miasuradze, Akhmeta district governor prohibited employees of the district administration to give interviews and to cooperate with journalists of Kakheti News Centre.

According to the employees of the district administration, the governor called them this morning and requested them to clarify which of them reported to Kakheti News Centre about cutting of the forest in Akhmeta District. “After that he took mobile phones from several employees and looked for the phone numbers of the journalists from the News Centre. Finally, he told us that if any of us make a comment with the journalists of News Centre, he will fire us”, said the employees of Akhmeta District Administration.

According to Koba Maisuradze, the district governor, Kakheti regional governor requested the explanation from him about the information spread by the News Centre yesterday.

“The deputy Kakheti regional governor called and told me to find out who informed you about cutting the forest in Akhmeta District. None of our employees admitted the fact so it means you are lying. If it is not right, then tell me who informed you about it; otherwise I will stop collaboration with your news agency. Generally, why are you traveling in my district without my permission?” said the district governor.

The representatives of local administration reported to Kakheti News Centre yesterday, that Kakheti regional office of the Environment Inspection does not work effectively.

“Daily about 60-70 cars loaded with wood leaves our district. They are cutting huge trees, they cut trees in the places where it is forbidden”, said the employees of Akhmeta district administration.

According to Lasha Chiviashvili, the head of Kakheti Bureau of the Environmental Inspection, a lot of licenses are released to cut trees in Akhmeta District.”The owners of licenses withdraw logs and treat them in their saw-mills. If we compare Akhmeta District with other districts of Kakheti region, there are more facts of cutting trees in the district because residents use them for fire-wood. As for the effectiveness of our work, like in other districts, only one group works in Akhmeta District and investigations violations”.
