Nona Tsotsoria Is a Judge for Girgvliani’s Case at European Court

January 12, 2010
Shalva Shavgulidze, the attorney of the family of Sandro Girgvliani, does not see anything special in appointing Nona Tsotsoria, the former deputy chief prosecutor of Georgia, as one of the judges of the case at the European Court of Human Rights.

“The group of several judges works on similar cases at the European Court. Tsotsoria is one of the members of the group. It is ordinary practice of the court to appoint a judge from the country the case is from and nothing is urgent in this fact”, Shavgulidze reported to “Pirveli”.

The trial of Sandro Girgvliani’s case is scheduled on February 2 at the European Court of Human Rights. Girgvliani was tortured in Okrokana forest and then died on January 27, 2005. Four officials of the Constitutive Security Department were arrested and put in prison for 7-8 years. Later, president pardoned them and made their punishment half; finally they were released earlier. The relatives of Sandro Girgvliani blame high rank officials of MIA -Vasil Sanodze, Data Akhalaia, Vasil Melnikov, Guram Donadze and Tako Salakaia, the wife of the minister of internal affairs, Vano Merabishvili, in ordering this murder.

Nona Tsotsoria was deputy chief prosecutor of Georgia when court was discussing this case in Georgia. Georgian media sources doubted that Georgian government tries to hush up the case even at the European Court. In the case “Irina Enukidze and Guram Girgvliani VS Georgia” Georgian government is accused under four articles of the European Convention. If the court satisfies the suit, the accusation side will have opportunity to re-start investigation on the case at national court.
