Ukraine CEC Discusses Issue of Georgian Observers Again

January 14, 2010

Ambassador of Georgia in the Ukraine Grigol Katamadze will attend the discussion of the issue of Georgian observers in the Central Election Commission of Ukraine on January 14. He announced about it at the briefing.

Katamadze introduced media representatives with the copies of documents they had sent to the UCEC about Georgian observers.

“We prepared all necessary documents in according to the law to submit applications to the CEC. Most part of our observers worked during the parliamentary elections of Ukraine and there were no complaints about them,” said Katamadze.

He is surprised with the cynic attitude of the CEC members who announced confidential information about Georgian observers written in the application forms publicly.

“Decision of Georgia to send large number of observers to the Ukraine was grounded by our desire to see this country strong and democratic,” said the ambassador at the briefing.

At the meeting on January 11 the CEC did not allow Georgian observers to work during the presidential elections. The Georgian embassy had submitted applications on 2 042 observers. The commission discussed applications of only 378 candidates. In order to get registration, 8 members had to vote for Georgian observer but only 5 members voted for.

On January 13, Kiev City Court annulled the decision of the CEC on declining participation of Georgian observers during presidential elections. The court ordered the CEC to discuss the issue thoroughly.
