The Government Forgot Idea of Creating Political TV Company

January 18, 2010

Levan Vepkhvadze, the opposition vice-speaker of the parliament of Georgia, requested the prime minister and the minister of finance to come to the parliament because of the condition of Public Radio.
As Levan Vepkhvadze stated on the special session of parliament on January 15, the radio has a problem because the government inadequately planned the budget of Public Broadcaster.
According to him, Public Broadcaster was ordered to make the political and the third channel, but no one knows with what funds. “When they looked for the outlet, they decided to abolish the radio,” stated Vepkhvadze.
MP advised the majority of parliament to pay more attention to the importance of these radios. According to him, the radio of Public Broadcaster might be the only information source for socially disabled people in the regions. Even they are in the list of socially disabled people, because they do not have TV.
Besides that, the radio is broadcasting in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which is the most important. “We are ceasing the single information source for those people, because the government made an inadequate decision,” stated Vepkhvadze and requested that the prime minister and the minister of finance come to the parliament. He wants to get an explanation from them how the budget of Public Broadcaster was planned.
Public Broadcaster is financed with 22 million for 2010. It requested an additional 5 million for making the second channel as the political channel, but the government denied the request. Kakha Baindurashvili, the minister of finance, clarified during discussion of the budget project that Public Broadcaster can make the political channel with its budget.
