“Newsweek” Confirms that Gigi Ugulava Really Spoke about Possible Denial of Georgia to Join NATO

Russian edition “Newsweek” confirms, that Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava really said in his interview that if Russia withdraws its military forces from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgia might refuse to join NATO. The author of the interview Elizaveta Maetnaia stated this in Russian edition of the Radio Liberty” “Echo Kavkaza”

”Everything which the Tbilisi Mayor said in the interview is true and it was his position at that moment” Maetnaia added.

According to the officials of the Russian edition “Newsweek”, interview with Gigi Ugulava was recorded last week in Tbilisi attended by his spokesperson and they have audio recording of this interview.

Soon after interview was released, Tbilisi Mayor started to blame “Newsweek” for incorrect interpretation of his words. According to his statement he did not say that Georgia might refuse to join NATO if Russia withdraws its forces from Georgia.
