One More Unsuccessful Negotiation in Geneva

January 29, 2010

According to the TV Company Rustavi 2, the 9th round of negotiations finished unsuccessfully on January 28 in Geneva; the discussion about security document lasted 8 hours. At the end, Russian side refused to accept it and requested to postpone the issue for the next round.

According to Giga Bokeria, the head of Georgian delegation, as soon as they start talking about the de-occupation of the occupied territories Georgia always encounters strict position of Russia. He states that Russia did not want to compromise.

Boris Chochiev, the representative of de facto government of Tskhinvali regime, does not like the security document and reprimands European community because “they have not realized yet that Abkhazia and Ossetia are independent republics”.

On the 9th round of the negotiations, priority of the Georgian side was to achieve agreement on international security mechanism. The both sides discussed human rights violation of Georgian citizens in Tskhinvali Region and about return of IDPs to their homes.

Before departure to Geneva, Dimitri Sanakoev, head of temporary administration of former Autonomous Oblast of South Ossetia, stated before the delegation’s arrival in Geneva that “We will raise question of replacing Russian border guards with international police forces. We should explain why it is urgently important for local population. We will also discuss how to resolve humanitarian problems”.

According to Shota Utiashvili, the head of analytic department of MIA, they will discuss the agreement not to use force in the group who works on the security issues. We will get the versions of the agreement, submitted by the chairmen. The Humanitarian group will continue to work on returning the IDPs to their homes”, stated Utiashvili.

Finally, the 10th round of the negotiations is scheduled on March 30.
