Chechen Refugees Settled in Pankisi Valley Lack Attention

February 1, 2010

Field office of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Pankisi Valley has been closed and all those programs which were implemented by the Refugee Council in the Valley for Chechen refugees were suspended.

According to refugees, the new head of the council requested to close the office. “The argument of his decision was migration of part of Chechen refugees from the valley after passportization process. However, it is not right. Although we have taken our passports, we cannot travel to the third country because of financial problems. The only institution which paid attention to us was office of the Norwegian Refugee Council.”

The Norwegian Refugee Council continues its activities in Tbilisi. Representatives of the Tbilisi office do not comment on the reasons of closing the field office in Pankisi Valley.
