Temur Basilia Was Detained in USA for Breaching Immigration Rules

February 5, 2010

Temur Basilia was detained in the USA for having breached immigration rules. Chief-prosecutor’s office of Georgia reported “Interpressnews” about it. According to them, Basilia was detained by US Immigration Department. He did not have refugee status in the USA and he lived there illegally. Although Basilia was sought by Interpol through red circular, he was not detained in the USA as a sought person.

According to f the chief prosecutor’s office, former Georgian high-ranking official will supposedly be deported to Georgia. His attorney, Shalva Shavgulidze, was not officially informed about Basilia’s detention; he learned about the fact on TV. Shavgulidze clarified that the family has not got in touch with him yet and has not heard any official comment from the prosecutor’s office either.

In summer of 2008 Judge Maia Jvarsheishvili at Tbilisi City Court sentenced Temur Basilia to 9-year-imprisonment though the accused did not attend the trial. He was charged for bribery; however, he was discharged from the accusations in abusing his power and unreasonable wasting of state property.

During Eduard Shevardnadze’s governance, Basilia was his economical advisor. He coordinated working process on Poverty Reduction Program and then its implementation; meanwhile he wasted large amount of money. Since 2006, Temur Basilia was sought by Interpol through red circular.

Short time ago, journalists of TV-Company “Rustavi 2” met Temur Basilia at one of the meetings in the USA. They asked him several questions but he did not answer them and threatened journalists with police. Later, American law enforcement bodies got interested in Basilia himself and detained soon.
