Working on New Constitution of Georgia Will Finish by Autumn

February 5, 2010

Working on new constitution of Georgia will finish by autumn. Chairman of the State Constitution Commission Avtandil Demetrashvili stated about it. He said the draft-constitution will be ready by that time and the parliament might pass it by the end of the year.

Demetrashvili added that based on the recommendation of the Venice Commission, temporary, so-called transition period shall be finished and European variant of the constitutions shall be worked out. “Many amendments will be introduced to the draft-constitution. Principle message of the Venice Commission is to work out effective constitution,” said Avtandil Demetrashvili.

State Constitution Commission had to finish working on the new constitution in December of 2009. Later, the deadline postponed for the spring of 2010. Now, as it was cleared up, the final version will be ready for autumn of 2010.

New constitution of the country will be put in force after the complete version is discussed by the Venice Commission and they release conclusion. Venice Commission has been working on the Constitution of Georgia since 1993.

On February 4, during the meeting with the delegation of the Venice Commission, part of NGO sector and experts agreed that debates about new constitution at the Constitution Commission shall be public.

Political scientist Andro Barnov reported about it to journalists. He said people shall know what issues are discussed and society should also involve in the working process.

“If we want to have a democratic state, we should overcome the problem of readiness of the society. Debates shall continue beyond the commission and everybody should participate in it,” said Andro Barnov.
