Georgia Sues Russia at International Court

February 18, 2010

Government of Georgia is going to sue Russia at International Court. According to Russian media, Tbilisi requests tens billion of dollars from Russia as a compensation for damage caused by Russian activities in Abkhazia and in so called South Ossetia after 1990s. Besides concrete loss Georgia points out lateral losses which delays development of economic.

As the head of temporary parliamentary commission of territorial integrity Shota Malashkhia reported to “Vremenni Novosti”, commission is responsible to calculate the losses. Parliament will discuss the issue; and after it a state commission might be set up to study the amount of damage in details and prepare suit.

According to him, after 1998 Georgia lost about 20 billion dollars. Damage caused by Russian companies on the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia will be envisaged in the compensation.  Suits on lost properties of Georgian IDPs will be sent to Strasbourg Court.

Parliamentary opposition states suing Russia is a politically motivated decision. Member of the Christian-Democrat Party Nika Laliashvili thinks that request of compensation is political decision and Russia will not pay.

According to the constitutionalist Vakhtang Khmaladze, it will be difficult for Georgia to provide good evidence at international courts. “Georgia can appeal to International Court, but how it will be proved. I think it will have only political importance, Russia will not approve, because in such case Russia recognizes its illegal activities. Georgia might make problems for Russia at International Instances.
