French Embassy Removed Transportation Restrictions for Foreigners in Pankisi Gorge and Desert

February 23, 2010

French Embassy in Georgia removed transportation restrictions for foreigners in Pankisi Gorge and desert in the south-eastern part of Georgia. Press attaché of the French Embassy reported Kakheti News Centre about it. According to him, they work on special statement and it will be published on the official web site of the embassy in near future.

French Embassy banned foreigners to travel in several regions during Russian-Georgia war because of conflict situation near the northern and eastern borders of Georgia. These places are: border territories with northern Caucasus (Chechnya, Dagestan, and South Ossetia), Pankisi Gorge with 4 4000 Chechen refugees residing in the area; secessionist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Gori district which borders South Ossetia and is 60 kilometers away from Tbilisi; the restriction was caused by attacks on cars and taxis, injustice and illegal trading. Transportation was not recommended to the desert (south-eastern territory of Georgia, near Azerbaijan border).
