School Directors Threat Teachers

February 24, 2010

Free Trade Union of Teachers protests oppression on teachers by school directors in Kakheti. According to the representative of the Trade Union Neli Janelidze, directors threaten teachers with dismissal if they go on strike.

“I visited public schools of the villages of Shashiani, Akhasheni and Arashenda to discuss the issues related with the strike planned for March 2. Several teachers attended the meeting. Director of public school in Arashenda village Nodar Jikrashvili told me he did not want his teachers to take part in opposition demonstrations. Otherwise he threatened with abolishment of the office of trade union in their school,” said Neli Janelidze.

The head of Gurjaani district educational resource-centre Lali Gabitashvili denies the facts of frightening teachers.

“Every teacher I have met thinks that participation in the strike is betrayal of pupils,” said Gabitashvili.
