Eka Tkeshelashvili: “France Hinted Russia Occupation of Georgian Territories Is not Problem

March 4, 2010

According to Eka Tleshelashvili, secretary of Georgian National Security Council, selling of “Mistral” to Russia by France is kind of award for Moscow and a sign that occupation of Georgian territories is not a problem. Eka Tkeshelashvili stated about it in her interview with Foreign Policy, translated version is published by Foreign Press.

According to Tkeshelashvili, there is a strong possibility that selling “Mistral” to Kremlin will change security balance in the region in favor of Kremlin. However, France tried to reduce it”.

“Selling Mistral by France is a political message for Russia that there is no problem to occupy Georgian territories and encouragement to continue aggressive rhetoric.

“This is a sign that occupation of our territories is real fact. They are not calming Russia; they have awarded Moscow,” stated Tkeshelashvili. Despite frequent statements of the French people, that this is a humanitarian ship, Mistral has a great possibility to transport military equipment, helicopters and soldiers. Hospital and military HQ can also be placed on the ship. It is possible to use the ship for humanitarian activities if there is a desire but it can be also used for military activities.

Secretary of Georgian National Security Council spoke about military forces of Russia and stressed out that the army of the country which wants to be a super state is very outdated and their navy is in very poor conditions. Everybody saw these gaps at the time of intervention in Georgia. Russian forces defeated us because of their high number. If other large country had confronted with Russia in different situation it could have terrible effects for Russia.

Exclusive negotiations started between Russia and France on the purchase of “Mistral”.
