Russian Prosecutor’s Office Launched Criminal Case against Georgia

March 4, 2010

Investigative committee of the prosecutor’s office of Russian Federation started criminal case against Georgia. Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported about it.

Investigative committee claims in 2008 Georgian side used forbidden methods. “We launched criminal case for the usage of forbidden sources and methods, and under articles on attack on civilians and those buildings which are protected under international law,” said official representative of the investigative committee Vladimer Markin.

He claims that various facts of breaching international humanitarian law, human rights and basic freedoms in regard with peaceful civilians of South Ossetia and Russian peace-keepers have already been confirmed.

“We also received allegations that peaceful civilians were murdered and kidnapped on purpose; unjustified violence was used against military hostages; heavy artillery attacked peaceful civilians, cluster bombs were used and 500-kilo aviation bombs were dropped,” said Markin.

He added that “as a result of Georgian military aggression, which was not provoked at all,” 10 soldiers of Russian peace-keeping battalion died, 40 soldiers were wounded; infrastructure of Russian peace-keeping forces was completely destroyed which caused damage of Russian state property. Marikin said during Russian-Georgian war members of Ukrainian organization “Una-Unso” were fighting on Georgian side.

“Officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia were working on attracting funding and providing other material welfare for them,” said Markin.
