US Congress Commission on International Cases Enacted Resolution on Genocide of Armenians

March 5, 2010

US Congress Commission on International Cases passed a resolution about genocide of Armenians. According to resolution, killing Armenians in 1915-1917 on the territory of Osmal Empire was genocide. BBC states that 23 congressmen voted for and 22 were against the resolution.

After that, Ankara invited their ambassador in Washington for consultations. The government of Turkey was worried because of the resolution and stated that the resolution not only makes relations between USA and Turkey difficult, but hinders relations between Ankara and Yerevan.

Congress discussed the document which was passed by the Committee on International Cases. According to the information of BBC, the US president Barak Obama stated during presidential elections, that if he becomes a president he will acknowledge the genocide of Armenians. Despite the fact, Obama’s administration was doing everything not to acknowledge the genocide of Armenians in Osmal Empire.

More precisely, US State Secretary Hillary Clinton tried to convince the head of committee and Khovard Berman, her party member, that the resolution will hinder their relations with Turkey, who is basic ally in Muslim world and supports Washington in issues of Middle East and Afghanistan.

The allegations and threats did not work. Berman called upon the commission members to support resolution. They passed the resolution, though their colleges from Turkey had appealed to American congressmen. It was said in the resolution that nothing good will happen after discussing the resolution.
