Law Enforcement Officers Detained Former Kakheti Region Deputy Governor and Other Officials

April 26, 2010
According to the Kakheti News Center, officers of the Kakheti regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs detained former Kakheti region deputy governor Kakhi Gemazahsvili, former head of the Kakheti regional office of the state property management and privatization department Kote Makhatelashvili and some other people.

Kakheti regional department of the MIA confirmed the detention of the former officials; however they did not make comments on the reasons of the detention. The MIA and the chief prosecutor’s office of Georgia did not make comments on the fact either.

Kakhi Gemazashvili was deputy regional governor when Petre Tsiskarishvili was the regional governor. Kote Makhatelashvili led the privatization department at the same time; afterwards, he was representative of the Trade Chamber of Georgia in the region.

According to the Kakheti news center, Gemazashvili intended to be the candidate in the municipality elections on May 30, 2010. Initially he wanted to be the candidate of the opposition party; but later the National Movement inserted him on the list; several days later he was arrested.

Reportedly, the law enforcement officers detained the deputy minister of the environment and natural resources Gocha Mamatsashvili who was Telavi district governor when Tsiskarishvili was the regional governor. Spokesperson of the Ministry Eka Bendeliani categorically denies the fact.

“Nobody has detained Mamatsashvili; I have talked with him on the phone 10 minutes later,” said Bendeliani.
