Police Arrested Activists of the National Council

May 3, 2010
Coordinator of the National Council Lado Bozhadze reported that on May 2 the police detained their activists in Abasha and Tianeti.

Representative of the Council to the polling station № 4 Elguja Gabiskiria, and candidates for the municipality board Givi Chilauri (election district of Zaridzes) and Gia Berberashvili (election district of Tushurebi) were detained.

According to Bozhadze, Elguja Gabiskiria was in his way to attend the meeting of the commission when the policeman Otia Gabelia detained him at the bus-stop for no reason. Gabiskiria was taken to the Abasha district police station for drug-test.

“Currently, representatives of the National Council are at the Zugdidi district police station and protest the detention of Elguja Gabiskiria. Head of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regional organization of the Movement for the Just Georgia Loti Kobalia will give a special briefing about the incident,” said Bozhadze.

“On May 2, the police arbitrarily detained the candidates of the National Council in Tianeti Givi Chilauri and Gia Berberashvili. They were taken to Mtskheta and now they are in the office of the head of the Mtskheta-Mtianet regional police department, Aleksandre Maisuradze,” said Bozhadze.

According to the Coordinator of the National Council, before the detention both candidates were threatened and oppressed. They were demanded to cancel their candidatures in the upcoming municipality elections.

The National Council requests the immediate release of Elguja Gabiskiria, Givi Chalauri and Gia Berberashvili, stopping oppression on their family members and creating an adequate pre-election environment in the country.
