European Court Will Announce Final Judgment on Girgvliani’s Case Within a Month

May 4, 2010
On May 3, the attorneys held a press-conference regarding the discussion of Girgvliani’s case at the European Court. The attorneys of the Girgvlianis’ family supposed that the court decision will be announced within a month.

The attorneys clarified that the main evidence of the government of Georgia – recording of the video-camera and extracts from the phone conversations were provided to the European Court incompletely.

“I have a doubt that on the day of Sandro Girgvliani’s murder Oleg Melnikov arrived in Okrokana by Data Akhalaia’s car. It is confirmed by the phone conversations between the convicted and the people who were sitting at table in the café,” said attorney Shalva Shavgulidze.

The attorneys said that the one-hour phone conversation is cut out from the provided evidence and it is proved by the chronometer on the audio-recording.

Shavgulidze said that the European Court was not provided by the recordings of the phone conversations between the high-ranking officials of the MIA who were in Sharden Bar that night.

The attorneys request the court to conclude the violation of the four articles of the European Convention – right to life, prohibition of torture, right to fair trial, and right to effective measures of defense.

The trial was held on April 27 in Strasbourg.
