Batumi Based Opposition Parties Responded to the Dispersal of the Demonstration by MIA

On May 7, opposition parties in Batumi responded to the incident which happened near the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on the previous day in Tbilisi. The incident happened between opposition leaders, several hundreds of people and special unit.

The leaders of the local opposition parties marched to the Batumi Drama Theatre. Demonstrators blocked the central– Rustaveli Street for several minutes and it resulted into the quarrel between the police and citizens.

Leaders of the opposition parties and their supporters went to the building of the Adjara government. They expressed their position by writing number 7 on the asphalt in front of the government building. The leaders of the opposition parties do not exclude the possibility of continuous rallies.

“By this demonstration we express our solidarity to the dispersed demonstration in Tbilisi. We want to tell the president of Georgia and minister of internal affairs Vano Merabishvili that they will not manage to establish police state in Georgia,” said the head of the Batumi office of the Conservative Party Davit Batsikadze.
