Prosecutor Participates in the Pre-Election Campaign

May 13, 2010
Gurjaani district prosecutor Gela Lazashvili offers plea-bargain to the accused in minor offence in exchange of their support for the ruling party. The Human Rights Center reported about it.

According to the human rights organization, the Gurjaani district prosecutor’s office has been making plea-bargains with the accused massively for the last one month.

“In fact, attorneys work only on plea-bargain. The cases are not sent to the court for through discussion. Even the amount of the bails is reduced. In exchange of it, the accused are requested to vote for the National Movement,” said the representatives of the Human Rights Center.

According to the Center, although the Election Code of Georgia prohibits the prosecutors to participate in the election campaign, on April 29, the district governor attended the meeting of the National Movement when the list of candidates was introduced.

The Gurjaani district prosecutor’s office does not comment on the information.
