Manana Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia Is Not Allowed to See Her Son in Detention Setting

May 25, 2010
The widow of the late president of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia has petitioned to the minister of penitentiary, probation and legal aid Khatuna Kalmakhelidze and requests to allow her to visit her son Tsotne Gamsakhurdia in custody.

Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia said she has been trying to meet either minister or her deputies since the morning of May 25 in vain.

“In reply to my request they called patrol police and forced us out of the territory of the ministry. Saakashvili, Merabishvili and Kalmakhelidze should be punished for similar action,” said Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia.

She said that MP Eka Kherkheulidze met her in the parliament building last night and told her that she had agreed with the administration of the jail hospital to arrange mother’s meeting with the son.

“We went to the jail hospital together with Kherkheulidze. The MP entered the building where she spent about one and half hour. Then she came out and insulted us as she usually does. She told me that she had not promised me anything and left the area with her guards,” said Manana Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia.

On May 24 Manana Archvadze-Gamsakhrudia arrived at the parliament and requested meeting with the chairman of the parliament Davit Bakradze; unless her request was satisfied she threatened with burning herself.
