Ethnic Azerbaijan Voters Call Each Other “Besh! Besh!” from the Election Booths

May 30, 2010
The observer of the Human Rights Center observed violations in the polling station # 49 of Sagarejo election district # 11 – it is located in the village of Duzagrama which is populated by ethnic Azeri people.

According to the observer, the voters are not marked in the PS # 49 in Duzagrama and people drop previously marked ballot papers in the box. Commission members or other voters follow almost every person into the booth since they claim the voters cannot read in Georgian language. The voters call each other Besh! Besh! from the booth that means five in Azerbaijan language and it is election number of the National Movement, the ruling party.

The man, who did not introduce himself, was agitating in favor of the ruling party as a commission member. Later, it was cleared up that the man was not commission member at all.

The observer asked the chairman of the election commission Gias Abuzarov why strange people follow voters into the booth and the chairman said voters cannot read Georgian; elderly people cannot see properly and they need help. The observer asked the chairman why voters are not marked and he agreed: “Yes, people shall be marked but commission members forget it.”

A voter tried to vote for the second time and the observer of the Human Rights Center did not allow him to. The observer asked him why he was going to vote for the second time but the man replied that he was simply assisting the commission members to regulate the entrance of people into the PS.
