The Human Rights Center Requests Public Defender to React on the Persecution of Zurab Danelishvili

June 7, 2010

Non-governmental organization Human Rights Center requests the public defender of Georgia to react on the politically motivated persecution on the representative of the Alliance for Georgia in Gurjaani election district Zurab Danelishvili.

“Gurjaani District Election Commission member from the National Movement Nino Odishelidze wrote a complaint against Zurab Danelishvili. Odishelidze wrote that she arrived at the PS # 47 at 8:22 pm on May 30, where Danelishvili requested to annul election results, and found chaos there. According to Odishelidze, Danelishvili gave directives to the commission members loudly; the commission members were seriously disturbed, they shouted and could not count the ballot papers properly. In fact, after opening the ballot box, they found that commission members had not signed the control paper in the box. Consequently, Danelishvili requested to stop the counting process, to seal up the boxes and send them to the DEC. “This irritated the commission members,” statement of the Human Rights Center.

According to the center, Article 12631 of the Election Code envisages fines for the observer, election participant or representative of the mass media if they breach the requirements of Article 70 Part II – “b” and “d”.

“Having studied the case materials on Zurab Danelishvili, we found out that “he had not influenced the choice of the voters and did not wear symbols or signs of any election participant. Thus, administrative liability against him is a politically motivated persecution against him in order to threaten him and not to use all lawful mechanism against the violations he observed,” statement of the human rights organization.
