Residents of Karajala Protest against Marriages at the Ages of 12-13

June 8, 2010
Part of population in the village of Karajala, in Telavi district, protests against marriages at the ages of 12-13. For the reason, they estimated a new rule in the public school of Karajala which aims to fine a parent if a child gets married at the ages of 12-13; the child will be allowed to continue studies at the school if her parents assist the family of the soldiers killed in the war or organization for the children lacking parental care with 5 000 GEL.

The residents of Karajala village confirmed the information. The parents and pupils were warned by the school director.

School director Elza Ashirova categorically denies the information about the new rule. “We really discussed various mechanisms to stop this process somehow. The parents arrange marriages for their 12-13-year-old children though the child does not want to get married. So, part of the parents requested to estimate a fine of 5 000 GEL or 4 000 GEL for similar action which will be allocated for the families of killed soldiers or for the children lacking parental care; however, this idea has not become obligatory mechanism for the locals,” said the director Elza Ashirova.
