USA to Continue Dialogue with Russia regarding Abkhazia and So-Called South Ossetia

June 11, 2010
The USA will continue a dialogue with Russia in regard with Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia.

"The USA disagrees with Russia with regard to the South Ossetian and Abkhazian issues, though Washington will continue a dialogue with Russia", Philip Crowley, official representative of the US State Department, told journalists.

He added that US State Department sees the topic as a “barrier in the dialogue with Russia and not in the relation with Russia.”
US official states that the meetings of the assistant to the State Secretary Philip Gordon in Europe confirm the situation. The meetings were held in the framework of the 11th round of Geneva Negotiations.

‘We see the possibility for the active dialogue with Russia. We pressed the ‘button of restart’ and are satisfied with the attained progress. The difference with regard to South Ossetian and Abkhazian issues is not a barrier’, Crowley said, adding the USA clearly says to Russia that changes are needed; ‘the USA supports the territorial integrity of Georgia and respects the rights of Georgia in the region”, said Crowley.

He added that Washington clearly declares to Russia: “The situation shall be changed. We support territorial integrity of Georgia and respect the rights of Georgia in the region.”
