Batumi Still Does Not Have Mayor

June 11, 2010
Batumi has not had mayor since April 27. The former deputy mayor Davit Samnidze occupies the position temporarily. Former Batumi Mayor Robert Chkhaidze resigned based on his personal application before the elections. Chkhaidze was number one candidate on the election list of the United National Movement in Batumi.

Within the term estimated by the law only one person, Davit Robakidze, from the Labor Party submitted application for the vacancy of the Batumi Mayor. However, on May 27, Batumi City Council refused Davit Robakidze request to occupy the position of the mayor. Robakidze clarified that he was refused because he represents opposition political party. Robakidze assesses the fact as violation of the constitutional right and states that he will send the protocol of the city council to the embassies and diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia.

Davit Robakidze, chairman of the Adjara organization of the Labor Party: “The motive of their refusal is that I will not carry out the course of Mikheil Saakashvili and the National Movement in Batumi and that I do not have experience in city governing. Thus, I want you to read the background of the former mayors – Irakli Tavartkiladze and Robert Chkhaidze where you will find much information about their competence and incompetence.”

Giorgi Kirtadze, former chairman of the Batumi city council: “Robakidze is not competent enough in this field. Davit Robakidze needs much more experience to become a city mayor. If he gains similar experience, the Batumi city council might discuss his candidature for the position.”

Former chairman of the Batumi city council Giorgi Kirtadze said that Robakidze’s candidature was declined because of his poor experience and incompetence. However, in accordance to the law, competence is not mentioned in the requirements of the mayor’s candidature.
