A Man with an Amputated Leg Intends to cut off his Second Leg in Protest

June 14, 2010
Doctors amputated right leg of 67-year-old Valter Kharashvili, living in Nokortsikhe Street in Dedoplistskaro; however, he cannot receive the status of a disabled person. He said that he was told at the district policlinics that in order to get the status he has to have both legs amputated.

“They amputated one of my legs and there are metal braces in the second one. I do not get any allowance from the state. They did not even grant me the status of a disabled person because I did not have both legs amputated. So, I will amputate it too,” said Valter Kharashvili who has borrowed a wheelchair “I even borrowed this chair from a person living in Arboshiki; when they need it they will take it and I will remain without a chair and I will not be able to move.”

Representatives of Dedoplistskaro district policlinics said that the resolution of the Minister of Healthcare regulates the problem and that a person with one leg is not granted the status of a disabled person.
