CEC Fined “Rustavi 2” and Imedi-TV

June 18, 2010
Central Election Commission (CEC) imposed a fine of 1 500 GEL on the TV-Companies of “Rustavi 2” and “Imedi TV”. On May 30, the TV-Companies announced the results of the exit-polls in their news program at 8:00 pm after the municipal elections finished; thus they breached Article 73 Part 12 of the Election Code of Georgia.

TV-Companies did not mention the legal address of the client when releasing the information. They did not inform the society whether the polls were paid or not; they did not speak about the method of polls in details and the exact formulation of the asked questions.

The TV-Companies showed the results of the exit-polls before 3:00 am without mentioning the information required by the Election Code.

Because of the abovementioned violations, the organization Healthy World in the name of the coalition of non-governmental organizations for the Civil Development filed complaint about the TV-Companies to the CEC on June 2, 2010.

Based on the complaint, the CEC drew up a protocol of administration violation on the TV-Companies “Rustavi 2” and “Imedi-TV” in accordance to the Article 126/21' of the Election Code of Georgia.

“Although 1 500 GEL is nothing for these companies, I think it is important precedent to fine them and to compel the CEC to take similar decision,” said the chairperson of the organization Healthy World Irina Putkaradze.
