The Human Rights Center Blames Gldani Prison # 8 Administration in Physical Assault of Prisoner

June 21, 2010
The Human Rights Center blames the administration of the Gldani prison # 8 in beating the prisoner Daniel Denisevich.

The representative of the organization, attorney of the prisoner Eka Kobesashvili stated that she found Denisevich ruthlessly beaten in the custody two months ago; he had bruises on the eyes and face.

“The prisoner told me that the prison personnel had beaten him. He said that prison personnel rebuked him for having a tattoo on the body; Denisevich protested against their tone of speaking. After that, he was beaten. Denisevich said that prisoners are often beaten in Gldani prison,” said Kobesashvili and added that they appealed to the public defender of Georgia the next day; as a result the representatives of the ombudsman visited the custody.

“They interviewed the prisoner where the latter denied the fact of being beaten. He said the injuries had resulted after falling off the bed. The report of the public defender states that a person could not have bruises on the eyes after falling off the bed,” said the attorney.

27-year-old Daniel Denisevich is a citizen of Georgia. He was arrested in 2009. The court sent him to prison for 8 years and 6 months for drug-addiction under Article 260, Part II of the Criminal Code of Georgia. Tbilisi Appeal Court did not change the verdict of the Tbilisi City Court.
