Merab Katamadze Was Called to Prosecutor’s Office to Hand in Bill of Particulars

June 22, 2010
Member of the Republic Party Merab Katamadze was called to the prosecutor’s office on June 22 where he was handed in the bill of particulars. He is on the list of political prisoners drawn up by Georgian NGOs; Katamadze is waiting for the trial. Currently, he is free from imprisonment under bail.

Merab Katamadze was single mandate candidate for the parliamentary elections of May 21, 2008 in Akhmeta district; he was rival of the leader of the parliamentary majority Petre Tsiskarishvili in the elections. On June 27, 2008 Katamadze was detained at the office of the Republic Party in Griboedov Street in Tbilisi for illegal purchase and possession of gun.

Merab Katamadze does not plead guilty. He said he was arrested because of his political activities. The police planted guns on him. He does not hope the trial will be fair. “It is already clear what kind of judgment they will pass. The court will not oppose the policemen and they will find me guilty.”

The trial has not been scheduled yet. It is difficult to assume what kind of verdict will be passed. The charge under article 236 of the criminal code of Georgia envisages both fine and 8-year-imprisonment.
