June 24, 2010
The USA aims to convince Russia to withdraw army from Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia. The special assistant to the US President Michael McFaul stated during Medvedev’s visit in the USA.

“Washington has prepared unpleasant surprise for the guest. They will discuss problems related with Georgia at the meeting on Thursday,” reported news agency Itar Tass.

“Obama’s administration intends to discuss the Moscow activities in regard with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Our long-term aim is to convince Russia to withdraw its army from these regions,” stated the special assistant of the US President and Senior Director for Russia and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council Michael McFaul.

He said the US has stated several times that they have disagreement with Russia about the deployment of the Russian army in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. “We all are interested in stability in the region, in the enlarging of monitoring missions and transparency of the activities of Russia in the region. We will try to explain to Russia what we do in the framework of cooperation with the Georgian government,” said McFaul.

Assistant of the US president in the issues of national security Ben Rods stated that disagreement between Washington and Moscow about Georgian problem shall not hinder resolution of essential problems.

“Yes we have disagreement with Russia about Georgia and we support sovereignty and territorial integrity of all neighbor countries of Russia but we can cooperate in the fields which are in the interests of all parties equally.”

Rods added that open discussion of the disputable issues between Moscow and Washington “demonstrates sincere relationships between the USA and Russia.”

“We think that if we manage to have dialogue with Russia on security issues, it will be huge responsibility and important issue like reinforcement the security of Russia and the USA and of our neighbors,” said McFaul.

Official visit of Dimitri Medvedev in the USA started yesterday. The president of Russia intends to discuss cooperation in innovative field together with American partners.
