Nadia and Nana Kortanelis Still Live in Mental Hospital After Recovery

June 25, 2010
Mother and daughter Nadia and Nana Kortanelis still live in the Asatiani mental hospital for many years though they have completely recovered.

On June 25, at the presentation of the report of the project “Legal Aid for Mentally Disabled People in Georgia” implemented by the Human Rights Center, the lawyer of the organization Nestan Londaridze stated that the Kortanelis have nowhere to go. The son, who was appointed to be the guardian of the mother, sold the common property – flat and now the mother and the daughter have nowhere to go.

The lawyer also stated that son of Nadia Kortaneli received the allowances of his mother and sister and did not give the money to the disabled people. “The agency of guardianship and supervision was entitled to control the activities of the guardian but the agency did not react on the violation at all,” said Londaridze.

Nana Kortaneli also attended the presentation who has been living in mental hospital for several years already.

She said her brother and sister-in-law brought her to the mental hospital together with the mother. They initially leased and then sold the flat which was their common property. As for the allowance of the mother, the guardian used to receive and spend it.

“My brother and sister-in-law do not accept my mother now. My mother does not hope that they will look after her. We request one room where we could live together,” said Nana Kortaneli.

According to the report of the Human Rights Center, it is one of those facts when recovered patients stay in mental hospitals. There are many similar facts described in the report.
