Special Operation in Khoni – Special Unit Arrested 18 People at Night

July 7, 2010
At 5:00 am on July 6, the Imereti regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs carried out a large-scaled special operation in Khoni. The officers of the Special unit arrested 18 people in several villages of Khoni district. The police reported that they withdrew narcotic substances and weapon as a result of the operation. The detainees were interrogated all day long. They will be charged on July 7.

The parents and close relatives of the detainees gathered in front of the Khoni district police station. They stated that the masked people broke into their houses between 5:00 am and 6:00 am.

“We have children. They were awaken by the noise and saw masked people, after what they started crying. I wonder why they acted so brutally?! Have not they abused our rights?!” asked a woman.

The neighbors of the detainees said that the special unit officers took them to the houses of the detainees and showed white-yellowish powder. The neighbors said the “white powder” was taken out of mattresses.

The parents of the detainees categorically deny the incident of finding so-called white powder and Marihuana in their houses.

During the search, one of the suspects managed to run away; the police discovered only little amount of narcotic substance and weapon in his house. Several detainees have already applied to the attorney but the lawyers could not meet the clients till the afternoon.

Nodar Kvitsiani is the only attorney who could meet the client on July 6. Supposedly, he is accused of illegal possession of weapon. He is also blamed in over-phone conversation with an “influential criminal”.

Being a follower of the criminal traditions might be one of the charges against the detainees.

The press-center of the regional police department did not spread any official information about the special operation. The charge will be imposed on the detainees in the evening of July 7. The trial to decide preventive measures will be held at the Khoni district court on July 8.
