The Court has Declared Tariel Oniani Guilty of Kidnapping and Extortion

The Moscow Khamovnichesky Court has declared Tariel Oniani guilty in kidnapping and extortion, reported the RIA Novosti.

The prosecutor’s office is demanding a 15 year imprisonment for Oniani at a high security colony. Oniani continues to deny his guilt.

According to the official investigation, Oniani and two accomplices, in attempts to extort money, kidnapped a businessman from Moscow on March 18 of 2009 and took him to one a restaurant where he was beaten with baseball bat. In exchange for his release, criminals demanded 500 000 USD from the businessman’s family. After paying a part of the sum equal to 218 000 USD, the illegally detained businessman was released on a third day. The victim then contacted law enforcement officers and the suspects were arrested soon after.
